Reflection Letter

Introduction

Writing for Humanities and the Arts has made me understand how others viewed things. Also, it was really interesting to do assignments based on the outside world and people. With this class, I have realized that writing is enjoyable. I made it a goal to be able to express my attitude and thoughts on a topic, for example: the art review project. This class has built up my self-belief in my own writing and for that, I am tremendously appreciative. I didn’t just learn to enjoy my own writing, but I also grew as a writer in numerous ways. To make me a better writer, I had a to-do list with certain habits I had in my writing that weren’t all that great. The assignments taught me how to explore the outside world, to express my thoughts and opinions about topics we were assigned.

Reflecting back on my resume assignment, it was very helpful to me, and a great way to put all my experiences into an effective assignment. I had been assigned to write a resume during high school, so I had some experience. However, I found that even though I had experienced how to do a resume, this one was more intense. It made me think of all I have achieved over the years. Though I already had all the required information in past resumes, I found that I had much more to add to this new one. Your experiences, education and activities change so frequently that the main task or responsibility of having a resume is trying to keep it updated. Which to me was a very exciting assignment, because of how it can help me in the long run. The cover letter was me paraphrasing everything I did in my resume.

Op-ed

The Op-ed assignment was about us, the students being able to discuss an issue that has been occurring in society. This helped the readers in thinking about the solution to the problem given out. My piece focused on the English language and how society judges’ people with accents, instead of trying to help them, in places such as schools, work places etc. It focuses on the inequality people face, because of the way they speak, and my piece related to many, because we all have an accent. The finest reason of my enjoyment while doing this assignment, was relating and talking about what many have to face in today’s society.

Interview

When I think of the word interview, I think of it as a series of questions asked from one person to another to seek information. In my previous assessment, we were asked to interview a fellow peer or someone we know who has a job in humanities. We were not given any question but made to think of our own. As we were interviewing our peer another peer was marking us on our overall ability to interview. This piece of reflective writing will be an explanation of what I thought my personal strengths and weaknesses were throughout my interview. Through reflecting on my previous interview, I was able to pull apart both positive and negative aspects of my interview allowing myself time to look into the effects that the negative points had on my overall interviewing skills, and how I can better those weaknesses for future interviewing opportunities. The main points that I believe I completed well were as follows; my understanding of how to use an array of open-ended questions, also my ability to create a welcoming environment through establishing rapport immediately. My peers also helped me by giving me strategies based on how to structure my questions, and what to ask also. Working in groups and reading different interviews by different people helped me decide what structure to use when it came to how the question should be organized. This assignment had led me in knowing how to answer the question during interviews, and the question that may be asked.

Art Review

Writing an Arts Review made us, the students pick a topic of what we saw art to be, and what makes it art through our eyes. This was an enjoyable assignment, because it was mainly our views and thoughts based on the topic we chose. I wrote about nature, and what I saw to be beautiful. I wrote based on why I viewed nature like that, and its positive attributes to the world. Many had different types of art review topics, such as music, art, research-based ideas, but mine was about the way I see the world and how it affects me as a person.

Grant Proposal

Our group talked about issues happening in society, of which our goal was to find a solution. Our topic was based on unemployment. We planned to reinvest profits returned from stable businesses into newer businesses. More and more businesses will be founded and will give those around them an open option to secure an income and take care of themselves and their families. This assignment made us think more and more on what solution we need to choose for this topic. It was nice experience to work with our peers on helping the society with a serious issue.

Conclusion

All these assignments helped my writing in many ways. Due to the different styles I had to put in each writing assignment. The most important part, I was able to put my voice in my writing. I expressed how I viewed the world, and issues that occurred. It educated me in learning more about society. Especially when I had to give evidence based on these issues, made me more aware.
